The southeastern region of Mexico has main tourist destinations around Cancun. However, this area is diverse and full of places to discover.

Here are some places you can visit in Chetumal. You can rent a car with MÁS Rent a Car at Chetumal airport and explore the southeast of Mexico.

Chetumal

Begin in Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo. Stay a few nights to explore the city and nearby places.

Enjoy the sunrise on Chetumal's boardwalk and then visit the Altamirano Market. There, you'll find crafts and traditional dishes influenced by Belize. We suggest strolling around and observing the blend of cultures, as well as having breakfast in this place.

Archaeological Zone of Oxtankah, Tamalcab, and Calderitas

Take the day and head to the Archaeological Zone of Oxtankah, just a 30-minute drive from Chetumal. Start the day by visiting an old place, then take a boat to Tamalcab beach and enjoy the white sand.

On your way back in the afternoon, you can have lunch in Calderitas. It is a fishing village known for its fresh cuisine in palm-roofed restaurants with incredible views and calm waters.

Kohunlich and Laguna Milagros

In a 1-hour drive from Chetumal, you'll arrive to Kohunlich. An archaeological site known for its complex residential and ceremonial architecture, full of mystical elements. We do not know its original name, as Kohunlich comes from the phonetically adapted name "Cohoon ridge."

On your return, you can visit Laguna Milagros, which is 45 minutes from Kohunlich or 18 minutes by car from Chetumal. Enjoy the lagoon and its water activities during the day, then head to Bacalar for the night.

Bacalar

Bacalar lagoon, with 7 colors, is 21 minutes away from Laguna Milagros or 40 minutes from Chetumal.

Besides different blue shades, there are also tiny islands and cenotes within the 45 km of water area. You can take catamaran rides, swim in the lagoon or cenotes, snorkel, stand-up paddle, kayak, and sail.

Some of the cenotes you can visit are:

• Cenote Esmeralda.
• Cenote Azul.
• Cenote Cocalitos.
• Cenote Negro (a perfect place for diving).

Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve

For an adventurous trip, visit the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve to make the most of your experience. Mangroves, bays, beaches, reefs, wetlands, lagoons, cenotes, and a variety of ecosystems make up this reserve. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage declared site.

We recommend camping in Sian Ka'an because the views during the day and night are unique.

It is very important to follow recommendations to explore this place with the least environmental impact. As a megadiverse site, care and conservation should be your priority.
