Rental Car Insurance: What No One Tells You

Picture this scene: You’ve planned your vacation months. You found a great flight deal, booked an incredible hotel, and reserved your rental car through one of those popular travel platforms or online travel agencies (OTAs). During the digital checkout process, you added a "collision protection" plan for what seemed like a reasonable daily rate. You arrive at the MÁS Rent A Car counter, ready to pick up your keys, but then confusion arises regarding the security deposit or the coverage you thought was already settled.

This situation is much more common than you might think. At MÁS Rent A Car, we want your experience to be flawless from the first click to the moment you return the vehicle. That’s why we’ve created this guide to explain how third-party insurance and credit card protections actually work, and why sometimes, the "cheaper" option online can lead to confusion at the counter.

How Do External Booking Platforms Work?

Online travel agencies and comparison sites are fantastic tools for organizing a trip. However, when it comes to buying rental car insurance, it is vital to understand the difference between the booking service and the protection service.

When you purchase protection through an intermediary, you are buying an insurance product that is external to the car rental agency. Although we do receive your car reservation, the money and the contract for that specific protection plan remain with the third-party insurance company partnered with that website.

What does this mean in practice? It means that when you arrive at the MÁS counter (or any global rental agency), you technically arrive "without direct coverage" from us. This doesn't mean your external insurance doesn't exist, but it operates under a very different model than ours: the reimbursement model.

The Big Misunderstanding: Reimbursement vs. Direct Protection

Here lies the key to everything. This operational difference is what usually causes the feeling of "paying double" or confusion regarding costs.

  1. The Reimbursement Model (Third-Party & Credit Cards). If you decide to use the protection bought on an external website or the one offered by your credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or AMEX), the relationship in the event of an accident is between you and that entity, not with us. In the event of material damage, vehicle theft, or an accident, the rental agency will charge you for the total amount of the damages (which can be up to the full value of the car). You must pay the rental agency directly and then, subsequently, initiate a personal claim with your external insurer—under their specific conditions—to get that money back.

The Risk: You must have the funds available to pay for the damage on the spot and the patience to handle the bureaucratic reimbursement process afterward.

  1. The Direct Model (e.g., MÁS Total Protection). When you opt for direct coverage on our website or at the counter, you bypass the indirect route. In the event of an incident, your financial responsibility is limited solely to the agreed deductible (which can be 10% or even 0% with MÁS Total). You don't have to pay out-of-pocket for the car’s value or manage reimbursements: we handle it.

The Impact on Your Wallet: The Security Deposit

This is the point that surprises travelers the most, and where transparency is fundamental. The credit card hold (security deposit) when renting a car is a preventive block that agencies place to guarantee payment for potential incidents, missing fuel, or extra days.

The amount of this deposit is directly related to the level of risk the rental agency assumes with you:

  1. If you have Direct Coverage (like MÁS Total): Since you are protected directly by our fleet insurance, the financial risk for us is minimal. Therefore, the deposit is very low. In many of our locations, with broad coverage, the deposit can be as low as $1,500 MXN.
  2. If you use External Protections (OTAs or Credit Cards): Since your insurance is foreign to us and works via reimbursement, for the rental agency, you are the only responsible party for paying any damage immediately. Therefore, we need a guarantee that covers that potential risk. This raises the deposit significantly. If you decide to decline our insurance to use an external one, the hold on your card could amount to $47,500 MXN or more, depending on the car category.

Why is this high deposit necessary? Because if an accident occurs, the rental agency has no legal authority to charge your insurance or your bank directly. The high deposit is the only way to ensure that, if there are damages, the repair costs are covered while you process your reimbursement with the third party.

What About Credit Card Insurance?

Many clients with Platinum or Black-level cards fully trust their bank's car rental insurance benefit. It is a valid option, but it has "fine print" you must consider:

  • It’s Not Automatic: Generally, for it to apply, you must explicitly decline all coverage from the rental agency (CDW/LDW).
  • Third-Party Liability (TPL) May Not Be Included: Most cards only cover damage to the rented vehicle but do not cover damage to third parties, bodily injury to others, or damage to public property. In Mexico, having Third Party Liability insurance (RLP) is mandatory by federal law.
  • The Deposit Remains High: Just like with intermediaries, by declining our coverage to use the bank's, you must have a sufficient credit limit to support the high security hold (approx. $47,500 MXN).

So, Are You Forced to Buy Insurance at the Counter?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions. The answer is: No, it is not mandatory, provided you can meet the guarantee requirements.

If you arrive at the counter with your external insurance, have a credit card with enough available balance to cover the high deposit ($47,500 MXN + rental cost), and accept the responsibility of managing your own reimbursement in case of an accident, you can proceed with your rental assuming the risk.

The frustration some clients feel arises when:

  1. Their card doesn't have enough available credit for the deposit.
  2. They don't want to block ~$50,000 MXN of their vacation funds.
  3. They discover the insurance they paid for outside doesn't include medical expenses, roadside assistance, or valid Third Party Liability in Mexico.

In those cases, the MÁS agent will offer our direct coverage. Not as an obligation, but as the only viable alternative to reduce the deposit to an accessible amount ($1,500 MXN - $5,000 MXN) and ensure you drive away with peace of mind and real, effective protection instantly.

The Advantages of Booking Direct on Our Website

We know that comparing prices on different sites is part of being a savvy traveler. However, booking directly with the service provider (us) has benefits that go beyond the final price tag:

  • Total Transparency: What you see is what you get. No hidden fees or surprise "extra costs" upon arrival.
  • Direct Protection: When you add our coverage online, your protection is registered in your contract from the start.
  • Low Deposits: By including coverage in your web reservation, you already know your deposit will be minimal, freeing up your credit card balance for what really matters: enjoying your trip.

Your Peace of Mind is the Destination

External car rental protections are legitimate and useful products in certain contexts, but it is fundamental that, as a user, you understand the risks and requirements they imply (especially the high deposits and reimbursement processes).

At MÁS, we value all our customers, no matter which channel they arrive through. However, our honest recommendation for a stress-free trip is simple: centralize your experience. By booking direct, you ensure that roadside assistance, legal coverage, and financial protection are just one phone call away, with no middlemen and no fine print.
